Horn of Africa

In the spring of 2011, the Horn of Africa region was hit by one of the most severe food crisis of its type in the world’s past two decades. More than 12.4 million people in Djibouti, Ethiopia, Kenya and Somalia have been affected by the famine. Rallying the international effort to feed the Horn of Africa, several SOLIDAR members have set up relief actions on the field in Ethiopia, Kenya, Somalia and Uganda, while others have worked at raising funds in Europe to support the victims of this unprecedented drought.

SOLIDAR Horn of Africa Solidarity Project

On 29 July 2011, SOLIDAR launched a call to solidarity in support of the victims of the famine and its drastic consequences for the whole region. In partnership with SOLIDAR member Arbeiter Samariter Bund (ASB) Germany, who are currently intervening on the field, we have set up the SOLIDAR Horn of Africa Solidarity Fund to centralise SOLIDAR members and partners’ donations in favour of a joint project initiative to provide relief support to affected populations, more specifically in the semi-arid Karamoja region bordering Sudan and North Kenya.

The SOLIDAR Horn of Africa Solidarity Fund has received support from SOLIDAR members and partners who have started fundraising in relay of our solidarity call, such as Union Aid Abroad (APHEDA), Volkshilfe Austria (VH); Fonds voor Ontwikkelingssalmenwerking (FOS Belgium) and Solidaridad Internacional (SI).
